Technique:
After my layout or line drawing is complete, I apply vine charcoal with a brush to fill in the tooth or indentations of the paper to create the subtle variations of the gray scale. This is what I would call my wash. My work consists of a mixture of applying the powder medium with tortillons, blending stumps and brushes. I do use pencil throughout the process but only for sharper detailing. I find the charcoal/graphite medium challenging due to the amount of detail that goes into each piece. Engineering how to achieve various textures with the tools I use is what I consider to be the most fulfilling part of the process, but patience is, by far, the most important tool in working with these mediums.
Artist:
I reside in Berkley, Massachusetts with my wife, 3 children and Daisy, our cocker spaniel. I have been working in the powder mediums of charcoal & graphite since 2004. Being a self taught artist, I am constantly experimenting with the application of the charcoal/graphite powder mediums. I have always been drawn to the look and feel of black and white artwork. I consider my works more paintings than drawings. Although traditionally, when you think of charcoal & graphite you don't think painting, but as for my technique, drawing is only a small part of the finished work.
Since 2005, my work has been exhibited locally in both juried and non-juried art shows & festivals.
